What Is Oud? A Beginner's Guide to Oud Perfumes

Beginner’s guide · Oud (agarwood)
Quick answer
Oud is the Arabic name for agarwood, a dark, resin-rich wood that forms inside Aquilaria and Gyrinops trees after injury or infection. In perfume, oud smells woody, smoky and resinous, sometimes leathery or sweet. Many oud perfumes use an oud accord rather than natural agarwood, so an oud note on a label doesn’t confirm the source.

This guide is about oud the fragrance material, not the oud instrument. Askar Perfumes is an independent retailer, not affiliated with the brands named here.
What is oud made of?
Oud is made of agarwood, the resin-soaked heartwood of Aquilaria trees (and the related Gyrinops), which grow in South and Southeast Asia. A healthy Aquilaria tree has pale, nearly scentless wood. When the tree is wounded or infected by mold or fungus, it produces a dark, fragrant resin to protect itself. Over years, that resin saturates the wood and turns it into agarwood.
Agarwood has many names: aloeswood, eaglewood, gaharu in Malaysia and Indonesia, and jinko in Japan. In Arabic it is oud (عود), which literally means wood. Agarwood can be burned as chips, distilled into oud oil, or used as a note in perfume.
Because wild agarwood is scarce, much of today’s agarwood comes from cultivated Aquilaria trees that growers wound or inoculate on purpose to start resin formation.
What does oud smell like?
Oud (agarwood) smells woody, smoky and resinous, and depending on the wood it can also read as leathery, earthy, animalic, sweet or slightly medicinal. It is deep rather than fresh, and it lasts a long time on skin and fabric.
The smell varies by region and wood. Oud from Cambodia is commonly described as sweeter and fruitier, while oud from India, especially Assam (often called Hindi oud), is commonly described as more animalic and barnyard-like. Oud from Malaysia, Indonesia and Laos falls between those styles, and each distiller’s wood smells a little different.
In a blended perfume, oud usually shows up in the base, under other notes. Rose softens oud into the classic Gulf rose-oud. Saffron makes it spicier. Vanilla and amber make it smoother and sweeter, and leather, incense or tobacco make it darker. That is why two perfumes that both list oud can smell very different.
If you like musk, oud is a heavier cousin. Our guide to Arabian musk perfume explains how musk and oud are often paired.
Oud vs oud oil vs attar vs bakhoor: what’s the difference?
Oud is the material; oud oil, attar, bakhoor and oud perfume are ways of wearing it. Oud oil and attar are oil-based and dabbed on skin, bakhoor and oud chips are burned like incense, and oud eau de parfum is an alcohol-based spray. Askar Perfumes stocks oud perfume sprays only, not oils, attars or bakhoor.

Is my oud perfume made with real agarwood?
Your oud perfume may or may not contain real agarwood, and the label usually won’t tell you. Many oud perfumes, including well-known ones, use an oud accord: a blend of other natural and synthetic materials built to smell like agarwood. Some combine an oud accord with a small amount of natural oud oil.
An oud accord isn’t a fake or a flaw. Natural agarwood is scarce and expensive and varies from batch to batch, so perfumers use oud accords to make a scent consistent and affordable. When a listing names oud or agarwood as a note, it describes how the perfume smells, not necessarily what the oud is made of.
None of the brands in this guide says whether its oud note is natural agarwood, an accord or both, so Askar Perfumes doesn’t claim either.
Why is oud so expensive?
Oud is expensive because only a fraction of Aquilaria trees naturally form agarwood resin, the resin takes years to develop, and wild agarwood trade is controlled under CITES Appendix II. CITES, the international treaty on trade in endangered species, listed Aquilaria malaccensis in Appendix II in 1995 and added the other Aquilaria and Gyrinops species in 2004.
Distillation is slow as well: it takes a large amount of agarwood to produce a small amount of oud oil, and the best old, dense, resin-rich wood is the rarest. Cultivated Aquilaria plantations have made agarwood easier to get, but top-quality natural oud oil is still one of the most expensive perfume materials.
Oud eau de parfums cost far less than pure oud oil because they blend oud, or an oud accord, with many other materials in an alcohol base.
Why is oud so popular in the Middle East?
Oud is popular in the Middle East because agarwood has been traded and burned in the Arabian Peninsula for centuries, and scent is part of everyday hospitality in the Gulf. In Saudi Arabia, the UAE and neighboring countries, it is common to burn oud chips or bakhoor at home, perfume clothes with the smoke, and welcome guests with incense.
Oud also marks special occasions. It is widely worn at weddings, during Ramadan and on Eid, and good oud oil is a valued gift. Gulf perfume houses such as Ibrahim Al Qurashi grew out of shops selling oud, amber and perfume blends. Our Ibrahim Al Qurashi guide tells that story.
Modern Gulf perfumes keep oud at the center but often pair it with rose, saffron, amber and sweet notes, which makes it easier for newcomers to wear.
Why is oud so strong, and why do some people dislike it?
Oud is strong because agarwood resin is dense and long-lasting, and its smoky, animalic facets stand out more than light floral or citrus notes. A little oud goes a long way, especially in an extrait de parfum.
Some people dislike oud because those same facets can smell medicinal, barnyard-like or sharp, especially in raw Indian-style oud. Others love it for exactly that depth. Oud is a polarizing note, a little like blue cheese or black coffee: it is often an acquired taste.
If you are unsure, don’t start with a smoky or leathery oud. Start with a rose-oud or a vanilla-oud, where sweeter notes soften the wood, and work toward darker ones.
What is a good first oud perfume?
A good first oud perfume is a soft one, where rose, saffron or fruit sits on top of the oud. These three are the easiest oud perfumes at Askar Perfumes to start with:
- Khalifa by Dkhoon Emirates (100 ml eau de parfum, $84.99): French rose, agarwood (oud) and vanilla. The gentlest oud here and a classic rose-oud. More in our Dkhoon Emirates guide.
- Alezz 1 by Alezz (75 ml eau de parfum, $99.99): saffron, nutmeg and lavender, a heart of royal oud, and patchouli and musk. Spicy and smooth.
- Gemstone 4 by Deraah Oud (100 ml eau de parfum, $149.99): rosemary, saffron and raspberry, jasmine, pineapple and rose, then amber, oud and dry amber. Fruity at first, warm underneath.
Try one spray on your wrist and live with it for a day before you decide. Oud changes a lot as it dries down.

Is oud for men or women?
Oud is for both men and women. In the Gulf, men and women have worn oud for generations, and every oud perfume in this guide is listed as unisex at Askar Perfumes. Western brands sometimes market oud as masculine, but that is a marketing choice, not a rule.
Choose by style instead: rose-oud and fruity oud, such as Khalifa or Gemstone 4, often appeal to people who like florals, and leather, incense and tobacco ouds, such as Wild Colt or Black Diamond Incense, appeal to people who like dark, dry scents. Buying oud as a present? Our Arabic perfume gift guide has ideas by budget.
Can you wear oud in summer?
Oud can be worn in summer if it is paired with lighter notes. Rose-oud or vanilla-oud blends such as Khalifa by Dkhoon Emirates are easier in warm weather than smoky incense-oud such as Black Diamond Incense. Heat makes perfume project more, so use fewer sprays in summer.
In the Gulf, oud is worn all year, including in very hot weather, usually in small amounts. A good summer approach is one spray of a soft oud on the skin, rather than several sprays of a smoky one. Save the leather, tobacco and incense ouds for evenings and cooler months. Spray oud on skin rather than on light summer clothing, where a strong oud can linger for a long time.
How do you wear oud perfume?
Wear oud perfume sparingly: start with one or two sprays on pulse points, such as the wrists or the base of the neck, and let it dry without rubbing. Oud is strong, and it builds over the first hour.
-
Start small
One spray on the wrist is enough to learn how a new oud behaves on your skin.
-
Moisturize first
An unscented moisturizer helps any perfume, including oud, stay on dry skin.
-
Give it time
Oud often smells sharp in the first minutes and smoother after it dries down.
-
Match the moment
Soft rose-oud for daytime, smoky oud for evenings and cool weather.
